wesleynotponcy: (surprised)

Wesley was on the phone with his father when he received an offer.

"Field experience? What do you mean by that? Outside of school, you mean?"

A pause.

"And then the Council might consider having me back?"

As if anything else could motivate him.

He switched the phone to his other ear, scrambling for time. It was an offer he'd have jumped at months ago, when getting back to the Council was all he could think about, but now he had to give it pause.

Still, though...

"I'll do it," he said firmly after a pause. "Where would you like me to start? ...Los Angeles?" He wrinkled his nose, but reluctantly said, "Fine."

With that, he started putting his stuff together. Most of his things were back at Fandom, but he could always have them shipped to wherever he'd be staying, he supposed. In the meantime, he packed his bags full of his things, then sat down on the bed, head in his hands, and thought about the people he'd have to say goodbye to.

[door's open and wes'd be happy to say some awkward goodbyes to people if you wanna send them over, but this is it for him this term, unfortunately. it's been so much fun being in fandom these past few months and the time i've spent here has really meant a lot to me. hopefully wes'll be able to come back the next app period. in the meantime, thank all of you guys who've helped make this experience so amazing.]

Quinn glanced in on her way to the slopes. "How come you're packing right now?" she asked. "We don't leave until, like, tomorrow afternoon and I know you are not that fussy about your clothes."

So, so true.

"My father wants me to leave school," he said dully. "Rather an inopportunte time to leave, in my opinion, but I suppose it can't be helped."

Or something.

Quinn pouted. "But we're halfway through term," she said. "Homecoming's next weekend. He ... really doesn't care, huh?"

"I suppose not," Wesley replied, staring at his hands. "I'm - I'm meant to benefit from some time away. Get field experience, training, that sort of thing. I suppose I can't truly fault him for looking out for my best interests."

And hey, it wasn't like he was going to be a social butterfly at Homecoming, even though he'd been kind of looking forward to it a little bit.

"That is what parents are supposed to do," Quinn said, a trace of -- something -- in her voice, as if she didn't quite trust what she was saying. "So ... I get it. Will you be checking your email and stuff?"

"Well," he said, puffing up a little, "I'll be in Los Angeles. Working solo. A rogue demon hunter. I may be out of touch with technology, or in situations too dangerous to allow myself to be traced." He tugged on his collar, straightening it. "Provided, however, that the opportunity is there, I will be taking emails, yes. Though I can't make any promises."

Pompous Wes was pompous.

"So I won't wait by my inbox," Quinn said, a touch eyerolly about the pompousness, in a fond kind of way. "But if the school blows up, I'll make sure you know."

Then, after she'd weighed what she was going to say: "Don't ... you know. Get yourself killed. Or anything."

Yeah, that would be helpful. If the school blew up he should know about it before he tried to come back to a pile of rubble or anything. Thanks, Quinn.

"Thank you," he said sincerely to that last bit. "I'll do my best. And... the same to you."

Though he'd always kind of had a theory that cheerleaders would survive the apocalypse, so he wasn't too worried.

Quinn was a helpful friend to have like that. Especially given their school might actually explode.

"Thanks," she said, with a tiny smile. "I know you'll be an awesome rogue demon hunter guy." Or at least, she was willing to say it.

"So is this a hug thing, or is touching weird?"

Aww! So not what he'd been expecting to hear, and very cute.

"Thank you," he said, smiling. "And you'll be - you'll be fine in your singing club," he added in kind. "We can hug, if you'd like."

Weird, yes, but manageable.

Don't tell anyone, but Quinn could be nice sometimes.

"I know I'll be okay," she said, reaching out. "As long as nobody locks me on the roof."

... her nice moments were sometimes fleeting.

Oh, don't worry, his lips were sealed. Not to mention that he was about to head out to LA, where he'd be with the queen bitch of being nice sometimes.

"That roof incident was entirely your fault!" he laughed. "You came out after me, if you recall."

"You can remember it that way if it makes you feel better," Quinn said helpfully. (Patronizingly, really.)

Wes rolled his eyes. "Well. Make sure to double-check that the door is propped open the next time you go onto the roof, then," he suggested wryly. "Just to avoid future mishaps."

Mishaps that would be entirely her fault.

"I appreciate the advice," Quinn said, sounding as if she meant anything but. Still, she was smiling as she stepped backward toward the door. "So ... we'll be in touch."

From: [identity profile] wesleynotponcy.livejournal.com
"Oh, yes, certainly," he agreed.

Which kind of blew his mind in and of itself because he'd kind of always thought Quinn couldn't stand him.

"Have - have a good rest of term, then."

Please, she would have been much worse if she didn't like him.

"And have a good time in L.A.," Quinn answered. "Tan. Stalk celebrities. Do fun stuff, too."

Katniss happened to be walking past -- she'd take comfort indoors when she was able, thank you -- and peeked in. "We don't leave until tomorrow," she commented, frowning.

Oh, this was going to be the hardest one. He looked up from his phone and immediately felt a sharp pain in his chest. Right. This was why he didn't want to leave school.

"I... my father called," he said quietly. "He wants me to go to Los Angeles and... get some field experience."

Katniss froze in her steps, looking him over carefully. "So tell him no. You're getting plenty of experience here. Or in Fandom. Whichever."

It was a futile effort, she knew, but she had to try.

"It's just..." He sighed. "It's just that he thinks it might be advantageous for me. With the Watchers' Council."

Katniss was at war with herself about her stance on this. That was the hardest part. On the one hand, she couldn't deny that if she was called home, she'd leave in seconds out of necessity. Particularly if the opportunity for advancement or unique training presented itself.

On the other, she made friends so unwillingly that to see one leave hurt her more deeply than she'd let on. And Wesley was special -- she, perhaps, hadn't been willing to admit how much he actually meant due how...tangled her situation was, but at the moment, the way her stomach had dropped to her ankles and how numb she suddenly felt made that internal confrontation a touch unavoidable.

"But you'll come back?" It was all she could hope for, and she didn't like how vulnerable the request sounded.

"Of course," he said gently. "You... you mean a lot to me," he confessed. "I'll leave, and do the training, but I will come back. Next term, if possible. Or as soon as I can."

He so wasn't as sure about leaving as he'd been before Katniss came in. Now he just felt conflicted, and more attached to Fandom than he'd ever expected to be. And, you know. Katniss.

"I'll write letters," he added, his voice trembling a little.

"I'll write back," she assured him, biting the inside of her cheek a little nervously. "I -- you're important to me, too."

She looked down at her hands, trying to think of what to say. "At home, before they send tributes into the arena, and before they do the Reaping, the official thing to say is 'May the odds be ever in your favor.' I've never actually wanted to say it to someone sincerely before."

Ahhh. Punch in the gut. He bit the inside of his cheek, hard, and tried not to be obvious about how awkwardly emotional this was for him. No such luck. In an embarrassingly high-pitched voice, he got out, "T-thank you. The same to you. I, er... I wish you luck on your mentoring."

From: [identity profile] thegirl-onfire.livejournal.com
"You'll be back before I start," she said, much more confidently than she felt. "The Reaping's not until summer."

Katniss was not, and never would be, a touching sort of person. She had always been awkward when Peeta took her hand, or when she had to curl up on him during interviews with Caesar. Even a hug from Prim usually earned her a careful pat on the back from her older sister.

But during those rare moments when she really was drawn to act and touch someone, simply because she wanted to, Katniss tried to listen to her impulses. Without cameras watching, she had begun to loosen her actions a little. This, however, would be considered treason if she was ever caught.

And right then, she didn't care.

And so, without much preamble, or forethought, or thought at all, Katniss stepped forward and reached up to draw on Wesley's collar a bit, and pull his face down closer to hers so she could kiss him.

And this was something he was notoriously bad at, if one tremendously awkward kiss with Cordelia was anything to go by, but this was Katniss and he'd liked her for months and she was possibly the most amazing girl he'd met for a while if not ever, and in his book any time a girl wanted to kiss him was a good thing, so he was going to go with it.

And this was nothing like when he kissed Cordelia anyway, because his hands didn't fly all over the place, they just settled on Katniss' waist, and he left his glasses where they were, thank you very much, and all in all he would call it a success.

Not to mention that this was the most amazing girl ever, kissing him, and yeah, he was going to come back next term for sure. And possibly send her a card. Would that be too presumptuous? It's just that he didn't know how to handle these matters, having only had the one kiss before, and that was not a situation that called for nice notes afterward whatsoever.

As Katniss carefully, unwillingly pulled away, shifting back down to her flat feet, she sort of began to panic in the back of her mind. Between Peeta and home, and Wesley leaving, that could have been a terrible idea.

But she wasn't thinking about that now. She pushed that all away, clearing her throat. "Well. Come back, please," she said, softly, smiling a little. "I think I've made my feelings on the subject known."

Disoriented and very very happy, he couldn't quite control the stupid smile that settled on his face as he answered dazedly, "I'll make sure of it."

"Good," she said with an awkward little nod, her cheeks heating up a bit. "Then. Please do write. And I'll see you in winter."
