Generally speaking this summer, evenings at the Hyperion were fairly noisy. After all the demonic activity had been dealt with for the day, dinner had been brought up to Fred's room for her to pick at and leave outside the door when she was done, and any slime from the aforementioned demon encounters had been washed off, Wes, Cordelia and Gunn would collapse in the chairs in the lobby with take-out containers and just talk at each other until they were too tired to stay up. Then, more often than not, Cordy and Gunn found themselves claiming rooms upstairs for the night -- driving on LA freeways after a day of demon-fighting was hard -- and Wes retired to his usual room, and sleep came really, really quicky.

It was a good system.

Tonight, though, it was quiet. There hadn't really been much demonic activity today, and as a result Cordelia and Gunn had gone home at a reasonable hour. Fred was... doing whatever she did on nights like these, and Wesley was left sitting by the desk with Chinese take-out and one hand halfway to the phone in case any calls came in.

Look, after a while the quiet just got eerie.

[[open for phone calls!]]

When last we left... this particular faction of our heroes, they'd just been attacked by a group of people who'd outnumbered Wes, Alex and Susan and had the element of surprise on their side. Fortunately, however, it seemed that the attackers had slightly underestimated their prey, as the aftermath of the battle left Wesley, Alex and Susan triumphant while the majority of their attackers were left moaning on the ground.

Rather impressive for a group of teenagers, really.

Or, you know. Anyone. )

But oh look, who was that coming in from the distance? )

The thing about caves was that, while they were pretty good places to hide from angry mobs, they tended to get a little boring. Conversation was pretty much essential.

Conversation and, you know. An estimated time of fleeage.

On portals. )

On strategy. )

Unfortunately, that fight? Hadn't gone so well. Hadn't gone well at all, actually; it had resulted in everyone being tossed in what was either a terribly-maintained basement that so happened to have bars on the door, or, more likely, a dungeon.

However! In what was surely a happy surprise for all, it turned out that the dungeon was not, in fact, meant to be a permanent storage center for the human-shaped prisoners. It might have been a less pleasant surprise, though, that their fate was left in the hands of someone who was purported to have a great deal of influence. Someone savage, someone powerful, someone with a great deal of influence over the way things were done in Pylea. This was the venerable monarch of Pylea, General of the Ravenous Legion, Eater of Their Enemies' Flesh, Prelate of the Sacrificial Blood Rites, and Sovereign Proconsul of Death, and she was prepared to pass sentence on upon them.

Or so the guard said as he announced her, anyway.

Then the doors to the throne room opened and Wesley's jaw dropped as he got a look at the highly bedazzled, bikini-wearing figure on the throne.

"Cordelia?"

There was a pause.

Then Cordelia dismissed the guards. And then she explained.

Spoilers: She didn't really eat any enemies' flesh. )

There were many things that could be said for Angel's car -- it was a classic, it was a convertible, it drove smoothly enough. But one thing that could never be said for it was that it was able to accomodate seven people with any degree of comfort.

Fortunately, as Wesley (who was squeezed in the front seat between Angel and Lorne) recited from the spellbook and Angel drove forward into the resulting ring of light that it created, the process of transporting themselves from the parking lot of the Paramount Studios film lot to a forest clearing in the middle of Pylea was quick enough.

So quick, in fact, that no one noticed the spellbook flying out of the open top of the car and landing on the pavement.

Oops?

The Paramount Studios film lot was a portal hot spot. Made a weird kind of sense, right? )

So they set off toward town... )

In Fandom, it was snowing today after over a week of holiday-themed festivities, and it was Christmas.

In Los Angeles, meanwhile, neither the weather nor the holiday seemed particularly relevant as Wesley pored over the scroll that Angel had stolen from Wolfram and Hart the week before. He'd managed to identify it – the Scroll of Aberjian – and locate the selection that pertained to the vampire with a soul, but actually deciphering what it said about Angel was proving difficult.

More accurately, it was proving maddening. )
